In the Spring of 2023 I found an old piece of the Matthew Knight Arena basketball floor on the UO campus at a recycling center called Bring Recycling in Springfield, OR. I decided that I could use this to make a large desk for my studio. I found inspiration in a mid-century modern wall-unit in my living room. The dimensions of the desk are 92” x 35” x 42.” The volume underneath is big enough to allow for lots of storage. On the left side is a cabinet with drawers on the left and a small locker on the right. The right-hand side has vertical storage and a locker. There is also removable drawers in the top of the desk and storage for long items in the back. I carefully laid out the base cabinets on the plywood sheets so that the grain patterns would align and so that I could be as economical as possible with the sheets, and ensure that the grain pattern would align to create a waterfall effect on the cabinets.. The base connects to the desk top via dowel nuts and bolts. The top is painted green to reflect the greenery surrounding the campus and city, and the base is finished with many coats of shellac.
